How Can I Improve My Fielding In Cricket Matches?

3 December 2009 6 Comments

Ive been playing cricket for a few matches now and I am a really bad fielder. I think its because I am scared of the fast moving cricket ball. How can I remove this fear and improve my fielding as Ive been told I dont get my body behind the ball and just bend down and pick it up.

Like with any other aspects of your game you need to practice, practice, practice. I suggest you get to training as early as possible and get someone to work on some fielding drill with you before you begin the rest of training.
Yes, a cricket ball is hard, and yes it does hurt if it hits you. Anyone tells you any different is lying. However, it takes time but you can overcome your fear of the ball.
You will have to learn to get your body behind the ball. So to save the frequency on being hit by the ball on the body, try lots and lots fielding drills. This will do two things.
One: improve your hand eye coordination so your hands will instinctively move toward the direction the ball is coming. Two: Toughen your hands so the ball will not hurt as much.
You need to watch the ball all the way from the bat into your hands. Watch it all the way in – I mean all the way. Not just to a foot or so before it hits, but all the way. (this goes for watching the ball all the on to your bat as well – but that is another lesson!!)
Once you get better at fielding you will find that your batting will also improve as you become more confident and less afraid of the ball.
Please understand, being afraid of the ball is a normal and natural thing for all cricketers. Yes, all cricketers.
Hope this helps – good luck

U just gotta man up, get your body behind the ball. If you watch the ball carefully you should get the ball with your hands. If not then just take the body blow. (remember if the ball is coming along the ground you need to get your knee on the ground so if you miss it with your hands it’ll hit your thigh….or if yuor really unlucky it’ll knee cap you!!! I’ve seen that happen n we had to carry the player off, he couldn’t walk!!)
EDIT: Jake – it gets worst, i remember when one of my mates went down on one knee n at the last moment the ball just jumped up over his hands and BANG into his nuts! It was so funny n of course the captain shouted out “that’s why god gave you two sonny”

Hard training & practice. You have to stop being scared of the moving ball & just go for it. You keep your eye on the ball it won’t hit you where you don’t want it too.
