(By Karthik Narayan) I read Shashi Tharoor’s tweet that we should all work on Oct 2, on the pretext that work is worship and that’s the best tribute one could give for Gandhiji. A lot of people might have cringed on the very thought but I smiled, thinking of the Chennai quizzers who fulfilled Tharoor’s tweesh (tweet+wish). Gandhi Jayanthi normally sees most quizzers in mufti, sitting at home, conveniently relaxing in their comfy sofas, half asleep and watching some patriotic movie on the telly (“Roja on Doordarshan).

New Zealand defeated Pakistan to reach ICC Champions Trophy in a perfect display of total cricket. For New Zealand, Grant Elliot scored a superb unbeaten 75 as his squad finalized their place in the final against Australia. Even though, there were moments which offered the feeling of a tight finish, it were New Zealand, finally, that walked away with the victory by a convincing margin of 5 wickets. Initially, New Zealand suffered some early setbacks while on their way to chase 234 posed by Pakistan.

For some horror fans, satirizing the zombie genre (and let’s face it, zombie films are practically a genre unto themselves) could seem like sacrilege. With the serious films that have come before – 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and, of course, Night of the Living Dead – SHAUN OF THE DEAD leads us down a path few have dared tread (Evil Dead fans should check out this film to see how a REAL spoof is pulled off). Leave it to the British to give us some gritty dialogue and bloody comedy all rolled into one.

Great effort by Melbourne Storm to win this years NRL final. This will certainly make Chris, who is a Storm member, and is currently at Etihad Stadium for their member’s function, very happy. This just about wraps up Victoria’s current dominance of Australian sport this year; Australian Football League (Australian Rules Football) – Geelong Sheffield Shield (Cricket) – Victorian Bushrangers National Basketball League – South Dragons Australian Netball League – Melbourne Vixens National A-League (Soccer) – Melbourne Victory National Rugby League – Melbourne Storm 74.7kg at yesterdays weigh-in, so I put back on the kilo I lost during last weekends sickness pretty easily.

I am chasing Tendulkar: Pontingcricblitz.blogspot.com

Only the third batsman to amass 12,000 runs in one-day cricket, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting says he is chasing the benchmarks set by veteran Indian Sachin Tendulkar. Ponting, after scoring a match-winning unbeaten 111-run knock against England last night to take Australia to their second successive Champions Trophy final, paid tribute to Tendulkar, who is completing 20 years in international cricket this November. “The number of innings of his I have been able to sit back and watch, I think he is an amazing player.

Nathan Bracken will consider stepping down from four-day cricket if it can extend his one-day international career, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald. The bowler said it was too early for his international career to be written off despite being forced home from the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa because of a knee injury. “None of the doctors I’ve seen have let those words pass their lips,” he told The Sun-Herald.

Gambling is in all likelihood one of the world’s most antiquated pursuits. Actually, the royal households, knights, and wellborn gentlemen have gambled on all sorts of events from the dawn of history. Modern technology has altered this and opened up betting to everyone. Modern technology permits everyone to take a chance on well-nigh any sport available just by switching on your PC. Only the most wealthy individuals in society were allowed to gamble their money historically.

Do you remember that scene in a match some years ago, where a bowler misbowled and the ball went to near mid-off, and Younus Khan bolted from his crease and hit the ball for four. Everyone was in agreement that it was the only way he could hit the ball across the boundary. The talent draught in Pakistan has brought this day when the Pakistan Cricket team has Younus Khan as their captain and Shahid Afridi the vice captain. Both have many things similar. Both haven’ t got even an iota of common sense.

Umpire Simon Taufel, five times voted the sport’s best match official, is not permitted to stand in matches featuring Australia because of the International Cricket Council’s neutrality rules. Taufel’s nationality has prevented him standing in some of cricket’s biggest showpieces, such as the 2007 World Cup final, the Ashes, and last summer’s battle for the number one Test ranking between Ricky Ponting’s side and South Africa.
Katich sympathizes with Dhonicricblitz.blogspot.com
10/04/2009
Australian batsman Simon Katich today sympathized with Mahendra Singh Dhoni who got flak from former cricketers after India’s early ouster from the Champions Trophy in South Africa. “I sympathize with MS Dhoni. Given the kind of cut-throat competition we are witnessing in the Champions Trophy, I can say anything can happen to any team,” said Katich, who is here to represent New South Wales Blues in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 tournament.
