India and Gary Kirsten made news last evening! No, not for showing the middle finger to a journalist, certainly not for going out shopping during practice hours, and definitely not for not attending the Khel Ratna award ceremony. Only this time the news was sensational, vitamins to the Indian Media. Guru Gary Kirsten published a four part document in a local news paper suggesting Indian Cricketers to have a sex boost to improve performance.

The BCCI has resolved the vexing IMG issue and will announce a fresh contract for the sports management firm that will pay them between Rs.25 crore – Rs.27 crore per year, according to a report in Cricinfo. The Indian board had recently terminated the contract with IMG for the Indian Premier League, citing payments that were not commensurate with services rendered. When this prompted seven of the eight franchisees to shoot off letters to the BCCI and when ex-BCCI chief Sharad Pawar also expressed his concern, the current president Shashank Manohar was appointed to resolve the dispute.

Graeme Swann believes his England spin partner Adil Rashid is second only to Shane Warne in history as an emerging leg-spinner. With the pitch at Centurion slower than expected for the opening match of the tournament between South Africa and Sri Lanka, England might consider selecting both Swann and Rashid together at some point during the Champions Trophy. Swann is the senior man, having claimed England’s best-ever figures against Australia in a one-day international last Sunday, but Rashid is being groomed for major events on the horizon like the 2011 World Cup in Asia.

Many of my friends, formerly thrilled with the election of Barack Obama, are now grumbling about his being too nice. They feel he should be fighting back, not compromising his agenda, and that he should play by the rules of the opposition in which anything goes. These same folks were a little irritated with him when he was handling Hilary with kid gloves during the campaign, but at least that worked out well for him (and us). However, they have grown tired of his playing by cricket rules in a Mad Max arena.

“ From woman man is born; within woman man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married; women becomes his friend; when his women dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound. So why call her bad? From her kings are born. Without woman there would be no one at al l”. This time I’m in complete agreement. As a beardie I’m all in favour. There are important reasons why we should ALL grow beards. 1) Electric razors add to global warming. 2) Beard hair is probably an important store of CO2, which is released into the atmosphere every time a beard is shaved or trimmed. 3) Old fashioned shaving brushes used real badger hair - badgers are now a protected species. 4) Think of all the plastics that go into razors, and the chemicals that go into shaving foams, aftershave etc. They could be being used to produce CDs.

Alert! Happy Heritage Day! A day that, as most know, has been hijacked by a marketing campaign and is now also firmly registered in many an SA consciousness as “National Braai Day”. But we aren’t going to say “Happy Braai Day”. We refuse. That said, there are some pretty darn good braai books out there and, if you’re quick, you can pick one up for 30% off at Kalahari.net , which is having a big sale on SA books – including some pretty terrific SA Lit titles. The sale lasts until Saturday.
