Hi,
To be a good fielder, a player needs to have high fitness levels. Thats the main priority that the coaches look into. Good agility and flexible body is a must in fielding.
Coaches ask their players to run a lot. Running is important. And, as players we specialize in some of the fielding positions. For example, if I was a specialist slip fielder, I would be concentrating on slip catches.
But the key in fielding is that you have to expect the ball to come to you every delivery. We need to be on our toes for every ball. Walk in when the bowler bowls, take a jump to go in any direction swiftly, cover the ball and have a quick release of the ball. This is more important. Quick release is very important in fielding.
Also, if you are specialist catcher like a backward point fielder, slip, or any fielder for that matter, you need to practise a lot in grassy and soft surfaces to get your dive in. It is tough to learn to dive for catches when the ground is hard. Practise in a ground where there is soft grass, so that you can learn the art of diving easily.

Take it from me. You have to select a player, whether batsman or bowler, who has reasonable fielding skills. If he hasn’t any, don’t select him at all, though he may be of the class of Don Bradman. Australia follows this and thus, they could ensure that their fielding standards are the best and did not suffer in comparison with South Africa even when their best fielders were playing.
If you have a good coach, will he be in a position to turn Dilip Doshi, B.S. Chandrasekhar, EAS Prasanna and Bishan Singh Bedi into world class fielders?
