Why Cant Cricket Be Declared And Counted As One Of The Summer Olympic Sports Even Now?

31 December 2009 7 Comments

Hey guys, a sporting event is added as an Olympic sport only if it is played by 25 or more different nations and is spread across at least 3 continents. I think international cricket does satisfy both these conditions, but evn then why do you think Cricket is still not recognized as an Olympic sport, whereas Football(soccer) and basketball is..

If you check the ICC rankings there are only 12 official cricket playing countries. But I did hear one of the commentators mention, in the Olympics that has just past in Beijing, that they are busy considering adding cricket into the Olympics and it will be played in the T20 format

The ICC has not made an application to the IOC to become an IOC member
This is what IOC president Jacques Rogge said

Because cricket is still a very boring game except Twenty:20.

Team sports should not be in the olympics.

Out of all the big cricketing countries, Australia, India and England are the only countries that have a chance of hosting the olympics. It won’t be popular in any other country that gets the games.
Basketball is played because America always gets what it wants when it comes to the olympics. Soccer is in the olympics because it is popular in hundreds of countries.
It won’t be in the olympics anytime soon. The Commonwealth games should have it though, since the big cricketing countries are all members of the commonwealth (except Zimbabwe, but no-one cares).
