Why Do People Say That Test Cricket Is The Traditional Form Of The Game?

4 February 2010 9 Comments

After all, it wasn’t played until 1877. If Test cricket is the traditional form, what is?

I suppose because it’s the longest, more established form of the game and has been around longer than ODI and T20 cricket. So Test cricket is prevalent in the consciousness of the wider, general, audience as the form that has more of a classical sensibility about it, what with the insistence on the white uniforms, the rules, the tea break (the only sport to have such a thing) and the long standing competition between certain nations etc. There are customs to it that just don’t exist with the other forms.
And it hasn’t changed all that much over the years in terms of revisions and innovations to the rules either (well not as much as other forms of the game anyway I don’t think). Well until relatively recently that is.
Therefore people think of it as the traditional form.
I’m sure there are better reasons out there than that though, I’m just guessing.

It’s the form of the game that comes into people’s heads. They think back to a ‘classical’ age probably the 1930′s. I agree if you look right to when cricket first started there are quite a few surprising facts and footnotes form the game back then. But to most people they would fairly hazy on the facts of the game back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Test cricket came into being as a true sport and at that time it was for played for pleasure and pride and individual honour. No monetary/ commercial consideration was involved. Hence it is called traditional.

They mean that the traditional form of cricket is where the match is scheduled over 2 or more days and both sides bat twice without any limitations on overs, it doesn’t have to be a Test match.

In those days there weren’t much entertainment such as partying, clubs, movies so people wil watch cricket for a much long period for their time pass.. so test cricket became famous in those days and so its traditional..

Well there weren’t ODIs or T20 around in those days, just tests. So I guess that’s why it’s refered to as ‘traditional’ cricket.
