I understand that during ‘tea time’ in cricket they have their brake/interval between sessions but what is the history behind the term “tea time”.
I understand that during ‘tea time’ in cricket they have their brake/interval between sessions but what is the history behind the term “tea time”.
In olden days it was gentlemen who played the game more for the sake of honour. It was played only during seasons and not all round the year as it is happening now. As the matches lasted almost from dawn to dusk(from around 9.00AM till sun set), they needed break.
It was scheduled as Lunch and tea.
In later days, the game became more organised and fixed time duration between each session was fixed. The first break is still called ‘lunch’ and at the end of second session, it is called ‘tea’.
It is interesting to note here that this was also followed in the one dayers when they were first introduced(60 overs a side). These matches had lunch and tea breaks.
In olden days there was no in between over drinks and drinks were observed only around an hour after play.
The Poms had two types of Tea. High Tea and Tea Time.
Tea time was just tea and biscuits or cookies.
at the time, rich people used to break to drink tea.
to relax
